Dear fellow Accordionists,

While you all play the accordion some of you make have taken up teaching or know of a teacher who may not be on my mailing list.  Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested.
For a while now several accordion teachers and I have been discussing the possibility of starting an association of Accordion Teachers in the UK.  This would primarily be for raising the standard of accordion playing and teaching in the UK.  For some time now our younger British-born students have been absent from major International competitions and and are outshone by students coming from abroad at auditions for further education establishments to the point where they fail to secure places at those establishments.  This is not to say that there isn't any potential in our home-grown accordionists, there is plenty, but somehow something isn't working in the UK.

Recently, at the end of a workshop for teachers held by Lars Holm at the invitation of Owen Murray at the Royal Academy of Music, a brief discussion was held on the matter.  The vast majority of teachers were in favour of forming an association whose main functions would be the following:

  • To raise the standard of accordion playing in the UK
  • To help accordion teachers raise the standard of accordion teaching in the UK
  • To promote the highest artistic and pedagogic standards among accordion teachers and students
  • To promote knowledge of good modern accordion repertoire across all musical genres
  • To build an educational pyramid structure using teachers, accredited syllabi, and educational establishments through which accordion students can climb towards further education and a musical career
  • To organise workshops and refresher courses for the teachers taken by world-renown accordion professors to increase teaching skills, knowledge of repertoire and teacher confidence
  • To make students and teachers aware of the kind of standards are expected today when applying to education establishments and competing in international competitions
  • To try to increase the accordion's presence in mainstream musical education
  • To give accordion teachers a united voice - strength in numbers

Preliminary ideas on the creation of the association:-

We need to organise an all-inclusive initial meeting in London with as many teachers as are able to attend to decide on the following:

  • Listen to teacher's views on the association's aims and assess the support such aims would receive
  • If enough support is shown, agree on how the association will be funded (through membership maybe and fundraising)
  • Agree on best way of communicating to teachers (website, email, e-newsletter?)
  • Agree on how to fund the courses/workshops for teachers
  • Agree on how to fund the courses/workshops for students
  • Agree on how often to meet and locations of each meeting
  • Have the basis for a constitution ready for this initial meeting and agree amendmentsElect a chairperson, president, secretary, treasurer and any other honorary positions

As this idea was first aired in public at the Royal Academy of Music, Prof. Owen Murray has kindly offered the Academy as a venue for the first meeting.

The meeting will be on 13th January 201at 2pm.
From then on we will seek to choose other venues around the country for further meetings.

There is a lot to be decided on that day so please come along with an open mind and with constructive ideas so we can make this work.  It will no doubt require a huge effort from accordion teachers but hopefully the results will be well worth it.

Please let us know if you will be attending as soon as possible so that we have an idea of numbers attending .  Please, please pass this on to other accordion teachers you may know.  I have a few on my mailing list but some of the email addresses may have changed.  All teachers are welcome at whatever level they teach.  The more teachers we get in the association the more clout the accordion will have.  I believe it should be a an inclusive and encouraging institution with altruism at its heart.

The list is growing and you should be a part of this association.

Yours sincerely
